Giving my notice to the Day Job!

Last Wednesday night when I learned my earnings from my books had far surpassed my day job salary, I rocketed into a state of ecstasy and giddiness. Even now, I'm still flying on the news. Sure, the money is important, just ask my partner. But for me, there’s so much more to it than that.

For two years I’ve held two full-time jobs. One – a Fortune 20 corporate position. Two – writer. When I began this journey, I thought, “I’ll get a few books out. Make some money. Quit the day job.” Right? (Sarcastic tone)

Sounded so easy back then, but it’s turned out to be more difficult than I imagined. My weeks became day job / night writing & weekend writing. Then there’s the promo I did for my books, etc. Soon, I had to give up much of my very active social life. For some, that wouldn’t be a big sacrifice. For me, it was. I love parties. My partner often went to dinner with friends alone and continued to send my apologies and to say, “He’s working on a book.” I am not the only one who has sacrificed to get to this moment. So did he. Thank you, Stephen. I love you.

Even with all the time I dedicated to writing it still was hard to deliver the stories swirling in my imagination. Why? I had a split mind. I would shut off the work laptop for the day gig and then flip on the personal laptop for the night gig (writing). Very tough. My thoughts kept drifting back to the day job in the middle of scenes. Not good. Still, I forged ahead. Pushed. Kicked. Screamed. Failed. Quit. Got up. Rededicated. Pushed. Kicked. Screamed. Failed. And on and on. Thankfully, my dream is finally realized.

07-Sep-2009 - my first book, Perfection: Eternally Three, was published.
05-Sep-2011 - giving my two-week notice to the day job I’ve had for twelve years.
16-Sep-2011 - will be my last day with the day job.

17-Sep-2011 - will be my first day as a full-time writer.

I’ve learned in the last two years that the winners aren't always the most talented or lucky. Sometimes, they are the ones who just don’t stop, just don’t give up - no matter what comes.

So please, whatever your dream, keep pushing, kicking, screaming...

I had a blast at Authors After Dark in Philly this past Thu - Sun - August 11th - 14th. So many amazing readers, bloggers, and authors.

Here are my Top 10... wait, Top 11... hold it, Top 12 - okay, there were so many but let me limit myself to

Kris Cook's TOP 13 Memorable Moments at AADPhilly

(13 is kind of appropriate, don't you think?):

#13 - The Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich at the hotel. Yes...at the hotel. It was monstrous and hot. Wait, I'm not writing a sex scene here. *clears throat* And meeting Bronwyn Green, Mia Watts, Simone Anderson, Brynn Paulin and William Cooper.

#12 - Meeting 4 of my dear Righteous Perverts Tina, Christy, Marcy, and Susan.

#11 - Meeting 2 awesome members of KindleSmut on Goodreads - Mrs. Missive & UWAttackCat - they were dressed as Vampire and Werewolf with cool scary eyes. Great costumes.

#10 - Speaking on my first panel with Melissa Schroeder (adore her) about what the revolution in digital publishing is all about. I was a nervous wreck. I was told it didn't show. I hope so.

#9 - OPEN BAR! Enough said.

Well, maybe not. Thank you Mel (Melissa Schroeder) for allowing me to host the event with you. (Really, I adore her!)

#8 - Singing happy birthday to Larissa Ione at dinner. She's so sweet.

#7 The blogger sleepover party. Larissa, Bells, Marq, Adrienne, Tigris, Joy, Ali, JoJo, Felicia ...

oh, God - all of them but I can't remember everyone's names. At that hour, I was on hour 22 without sleep - a precursor to how the whole time at AAD would go down. Someone shoot me an email and I'll update the list.

#6 (really #1, but I don't want someone to get the big head) - Getting my ass grabbed by Joy from JoyfullyReviewed. SimplyAli - you need to make her behave better in public.

#5 - Drinks in my room with Sylvia Day, Eliza Gayle, Joy, Melissa Schroeder, Lissa Matthews, Karin Tabke, Cat Johnson, SimplyAli, Felicia, and the Righteous Perverts. Yes, we had spillage, but Susan R. and I did get the Red Wine bottle opened.

#4 - Tilly Greene stalking me in the elevators. She also did an awesome job, as did the other authors on the BDSM panel, IMHO.

#3 - (Warning - my sick way of looking at things to follow) When Joy held up her hand when the Tweets started blasting and said - Goldfish and Worms! I was really needing a snack and wondered if I could get room service to bring some up. LOL!

#2 - Breakfast at the Chocolate place with the delicious waffles and waiters. Yummy!

#1 - Bells (a terrific blogger) who came up to me and said she really was impressed with me and couldn't wait to read my books.

There are so many other moments. Meeting the amazing Stella Price, who put the whole thing together. Others who knocked my socks off were Melissa Ecker, Theresa Meyers, Tilly Greene, Rita Sawyer, and on and on...

New Orleans can't come soon enough. Wait. Let me have a couple more nights of sleep, then it can come.

A Look at Amazon Kindle rankings

Many motivational writers recommend that whatever kind of person you want to become... find those kind of people and spend time with them. I've been very lucky in that respect. I'm part of an amazing group of authors and readers who call ourselves the Righteous Perverts. This year alone I've seen the RP authors reach amazing heights. Curious to find a way to measure our successes, I decided to do a little research about Amazon Kindle sales rankings. I can be a bit of a geek from time to time.

This morning my geekiness was full throttle.

Reported in a Jan 27, 2011 CNN article by Julianne Pepitone, eBooks have surpassed paperback sales on Amazon.

"...for every 100 paperback books sold, Amazon has sold 115 Kindle books since the beginning of the year, the company said."

Pepitone's article noted that the online retailer posted quarterly sales of $13 billion for the last quarter of 2010.

I realize Amazon sells other things besides books (the Kindle device is one example, and there are many more), still a big percentage of its sales comes from book sales, both print and digital. With the shift from print to eBooks coming faster than anticipated, I am even more interested in sales rankings at Amazon.

It's my understanding that Amazon sales rankings for books are updated once each hour. The lower the number means the better the sales. It's like each download constitutes a vote. The more votes, the better ranking. The fewer votes, the lower the ranking. Beyond that, I don't know much. How long do previous sales remain counted? I don't know. How do free books vs. purchased books rankings differ? Again, I don't know. There are numerous questions that swirl in my head, but for now I have enough to go on for this exercise.

As of this writing Amazon states it has 943,802 eBooks.
So to be in the top 10% of all eBooks on Amazon a book needs a sales ranking of 94,802.
10% - 94,380 / 5% - 47,190 / 2% - 18,876 / 1% - 9,438
1/2 of 1% - 4,719 / 1/4th of 1% - 2,360 / 1/10th of 1% - 948
...and so on.

My buddy Melissa Schroeder's book A LITTLE HARMLESS PLEASURE sits at #795 as of this writing, and her book which is available for pre-order and release June 7th A LITTLE HARMLESS ADDICTION has made the top 1% and is moving up every day. No doubt it will be her best seller of all time, and that's saying a lot for an author who has 30+ titles available.

The person who urged me to write romance in the first place in 2009 has had a wonderful year already. Shayla Black's book SURRENDER TO ME made the New York Times. The Kindle version stayed under 500 out of all eBook titles at Amazon for quite some time after it released.

My dear friend Sophie Oak's debut book SMALL TOWN SIREN came out on Amazon in August last year and got under 200 in the sales rankings. As of this morning, it is in the 1/4th of 1% range. Wow! Every one of her titles since then have sold like mad, each reaching the coveted 1/10th of 1% level. Her latest ONE TO KEEP just went up on Amazon yesterday and currently sits at #1,621 while continuing to zoom up the rankings.

Other buddies who are killing on Kindle sales rankings this morning:

Chloe Lang has two titles in her serialized erotic romance GOING WILDE #839 & WILDE FIRE #1034
Kiera West's paranormal shifter series also has two books in the top tier. SEDUCING THEIR MATE #1249 and THE ALPHA'S FALL #1129

My own book, SECRET CRAVINGS did amazing this year on Amazon, staying under 1k for over 6 weeks and still remains in the top 1%.

How does all that correlate into book sales and royalties? I just don't know. Still 13 billion in sales at Amazon is quite a proverbial money pie. Congrats RP authors. May this year continue to bring you big slices from Amazon and other retailers.

Whew! I think I've geeked out enough for one day.

Super busy after the great weekend with Shayla Black and Sophie Oak. Ate Japanese food, devoured snacks - candy, chips, crakers, etc..., and each of us plotted an entire erotic romance book. Woohoo! Anyway - thought I'd share an excerpt from my book THREE TO PLAY (mmf). I must admit that Clint and Dustin are two of my favorite heroes and Beth helps them open up to each other... and also to her:

EXCERPT:

Clint put his hands up to his face. The memory of that night overwhelmed him.

“What happened, Clint?” Beth touched his shoulder.

“My grandfather caught us kissing. He jerked the boy up out of the bed, and told me to stay put. I heard my grandfather beat the boy. When the screams died down, my grandfather came back alone. He glared at me. Then told me to go to sleep before slamming the door.”

“What happened to the boy?”

“From my window, I saw him walking to the road. I wanted him to look back, but he didn’t. I never saw him again. Two months later, I left for Portland and never returned.”

Beth choked out, “My God, you’ve carried that all these years.”

He never shared any of that with anyone. And while telling them, tears flowed out of his eyes like a dam bursting. He felt the salty tracks they left on his cheeks. He felt like he’d run a marathon.

“What happened to that fucking grandfather of yours?” Dustin spat out. “I’d be happy to take the old man out.”

“Too late, Dustin. My youngest sister found me about two years ago. She called me the day before his funeral to tell me the old man died.”

“You were only thirteen when you left for Portland.” Beth’s eyes were bright red and tears fell freely from her eyes. “Did you have other family there?”

“No. I could pass myself off as eighteen. That’s when I got my first job in radio. I worked overnights at a little station.”

Dustin looked at him. “You’ve been carrying that for a long time.”

“Yes.”

Beth moved in close, her face inches from his. She kissed the tear remnants on his cheeks. “So, is that why you froze when Dustin touched your shoulder?”

“Yes.” Clint felt like a deflated balloon.

“You were scared that Dustin would realize you’re in love with him?”

“Yes, I’m in love with Dustin.” Clint finally said it out loud.

Had he made a mistake?

It was one thing to tell his tale of pain, but another to admit to the secret of his love for Dustin. Clint feared how Dustin might react.

He didn’t expect reciprocation sexually. He’d seen Dustin’s skill in the bedroom. He didn’t believe that his friend’s tastes ran to the man-on-man variety. Clint also didn’t expect an equal return emotionally, though he and Dustin had been close for years. Would his admission of love end their friendship? Clint’s gut seized into a knot.

“I thought that might be the case.” Dustin’s stare pierced his very center.

That he suspected astonished Clint. “You did? How long have you known?”

“A while,” Dustin nodded, “though you should call me dense. Before Friday night with Beth, I was never certain.”

“Really?” Clint couldn’t get his head around it.

Dustin smiled broadly. “Yes.”

“And you’re okay with that?” A lump grew in Clint’s throat.

“I’m more than okay with it. Friday night blew me away. But I promise, tonight will be even more incredible.” Dustin squeezed Clint’s thigh tightly.

Heat shot into Clint’s already lengthened cock from the Dustin’s touch. Beth leaned in and kissed along Clint’s jaw. Her hand went to his other thigh. A rhythmic thrum grew inside him. Did she wonder if he’d only been with her Friday so that he could get close to Dustin? That wasn’t true. Clint desired Beth. Everything about her bewitched him, and he’d fallen completely in love with her.

She helped him accept his other desires. Passion for a man’s muscled touch on him—Dustin’s touch. He wanted both of them and in the most sinful of ways.

“I know what it’s like to be afraid.” Beth leaned over Clint and took Dustin’s hand by the wrist.

He craved them both. But at what cost? Though Dustin said that tonight would be incredible, what did that mean? A night in the sack, followed by a sunrise of regrets?

“You two don’t have to do this.”

“No, we don’t. But we want to do this.” Dustin leaned into him. “And Clint, most of all, I want to do this because I want you to be happy for once in your life.”

A flood of euphoria washed over Clint. He could no longer resist Dustin and Beth.

“Do you trust us?” Beth’s eyes sparkled.

God, she amazed him. “Yes.”

Clint’s heart pounded against his ribs. For years, that memory of his grandfather jerking up the boy from his bed imprisoned Clint. He’d been running from himself for so long. He cut off half of himself ever since he left that farm. Now, he purged the old bastard from his mind with the help of these two incredible people, willing to explore with him the other half of his sexuality.

Beth lifted Dustin’s hand and guided it to Clint’s bulge. Dustin squeezed Clint’s dick through the fabric of his pants. Something akin to a lightning bolt ripped through Clint.

“We’re really going to do this.” Clint looked from Beth to Dustin.

Both their eyes danced with lust. Then Clint looked down at Dustin’s shorts and spotted his rock-hard cock.

I'm lucky to have so many wonderful friends. They have been so supportive on my writing journey. How they endured me rambling on and on about rejections, plots, characters, etc... at dinners, parties, breakfasts--I will never know? Still, I'm glad they did.

That brings me to two special friends and mentors, authors Shayla Black and Melissa Schroeder. Without them, I wouldn't be a part of the wonderful romance community of readers and authors. Shayla's and Melissa's encouragement and advice give me the tools to keep moving on, pressing forward, overcoming challenges.

Failure is easy.
With great friends, success can be easy, too.

If you're interested, here's some of my personal steps to fail or succeed... the choice is mine:

Step to fail - Don't tell anyone about my dream.
I still find it hard to introduce myself as a writer. It was even harder when I was not published. Plus, if I don't tell anyone - I can't disappoint.

Step to succeed - Tell Everyone
It makes me accountable. When I started telling friends and family about being a writer, they started asking me what I was doing about it. I wrote and submitted work. When they asked again, I had something to share.

Step to fail - Know there is plenty of time to pursue it later.
Even now, I am a major procrastinator. If you need some excuses why you shouldn't act today on your own dream, send me an email. I've got a million of them.

Step to succeed - Do something everyday that moves me closer to my goal
The smallest step is also part of the journey to the realization of my dreams. Seriously, even the pile of rejection letters that I have in a box are evidences of movement forward. I learned from each and every "Though not for us, we wish you luck in the pursuit to get your story published" , "like the characters, but the plot is lacking" , "great voice, poor characters" , and then my favorite - "revise and resubmit".

Step to fail - Believe in my self-doubt.
"I have too much to learn" , "I CAN'T" , "No one will like this story" , "I don't have the (insert whatever will feed my self-doubt here like resources, time, support, education, etc...)"

Step to succeed - Believe in me!
"I will learn" , "I CAN" , "This story is amazing! And I actually wrote it. Woohoo!" , "I have all I need to succeed."

Step to fail - Go it alone.
Still, even soloists have accompanists, but best to wing it by myself than to open up to critiques and advice. Hell, I can figure out anything alone. Can't I?

Step to succeed - Mentors are a MUST!!!
Which brings me back to Shayla and Melissa. I am so grateful to them for all they've done for me. Whatever success I realize, they fully share in it.

You wait for the feedback from reviewers and readers. You hope you've struck a cord with your story and characters. Then you wait to hear.

Summer is almost over!

Living in Dallas, this Summer has been long and hot. Even though I am a lover of the sun, I'm ready for autumn. Cooler evenings will be such a nice change from the take-your-breath-away furnace we've been living with.

I'm also looking forward to having fewer distractions to keep me from the writing desk this time of year. I plan on really buckling down and writing during this respite between fun-in-the-sun months and the winter holidaze (yes, that's how I spell it - LOL!).

I'm currently working on two novellas.

One for Valentine's Day, another Texas Wolf Pack book titled - PRIMAL HEAT. It's a m/f erotic paranormal with Luke and Meagan (she's the sister of heroine #1 in SECRET CRAVINGS out in Dec.

The other book is a sci-fi tale that I'm really excited about. Maxim and Danielle. These two really get to me.

I must admit that I love getting good reviews. Duh!

And I hate getting bad reviews. Duh!

What I'm learning is that you can learn from all reviews. Like most writers, I'm pretty fragile when it comes to taking critiques. That is more true once the book is available for purchase and I have no way of changing anything about it. But, I must admit I do learn from each of them.

One reviewer (which I will not name) of a book of mine thought my heroine was TO STUPID TO LIVE (TSTL). It crushed me. Then, several subsequent reviews gushed about the same heroine and how strong and smart she was. I realized that the first reviewer didn't identify with my heroine. She thought the choices by the character were idiotic and put her in undue danger. The other reviewers saw the same choices as acts of courage for a brother in even greater danger. Both points are vaild opinions.

As I am currently working on the sequel to the book with the courageous/TSTL heroine, I hope to write a book that will receive more of the later type reviews. Got my fingers crossed for CAPTIVATION. Send me positive thoughts.

Post - Thanksgiving

I love (and dread) the holidays. My mom visited me last week for the Thanksgiving. She came in on Monday and left this past Monday. It was a nice time. But...

My schedule got shot to hell. I let my mom be an excuse. I should've spent time with her and then popped into the office for some steady writing...every day. Unfortunately, I am behind on writing, promo, blogging, etc... I anticipate that Christmas will be more of the same. *Groan* Still, a change in the routine is good for me. Hectic works for me. When the pace is too slow, I falter.

I'm more like the rabbit than the turtle in the old fable. Spurts of amazing speed and lots of words to the page are too often surrounded by days of leisure and avoidance. I need to work on a more methodical process. Day by day. Page by page. Line by line.

Enough of my self-deprecation. Time to get writing. CAPTIVATION awaits.

The business of writing is tough...not for the faint of heart.

I was up until 5am Sunday, finishing up the final polish on THREE TO PLAY and then sent into Siren. I haven't really caught up on my sleep much...(yes, I'd like cheese and crackers with my Whine - LOL!)
I'm thrilled it is done, and very happy with the results. Slated to come out sometime this winter.

THREE TO PLAY is a Contemporary Erotic Menage (MMF) that gives a nod to my old career in radio broadcasting. Clint, hero #1, is a tough, no-nonsense kind of guy. Dustin, hero #2, is a care-free stud. Early Adopter Readers
This is second fastest category of readers who take a chance on a new discovery. They sometimes wait for a review or a recommendation (not always) before taking a chance on a new work. The offer valuable opinions and critiques.

Early Majority Readers
Readers in this category tend to be slower in buying a new author. A single or combination of the following will nudge them on to take a chance on a new author: reviews, blurbs, interviews, recommendations. This group is less likely to give a recommendation than the previous two categories, but if asked will.

Late Majority Readers
Readers that take a chance after the author has reached a certain level of success from the previous 3 categories: best selling status, contest wins, top-notch reviews, multiple books shelved at bookstores, etc… They typically do not off opinions about books – good or bad. Went to a show at the Majestic Theater in Dallas. Pretty fun.
Had a migraine for two days. Yes - two days.

PERFECTION is at #2 on my publisher's best seller 14-day list. Got my fingers crossed for #1.

Heat

I rarely sense a big shift in my life.

Most days the changes are so slight I miss them. They're like the temperature changing from morning to afternoon in Texas, inching up and up until sweat beads on my forehead, then (and only then) I finally become aware of the heat.

The change actually begins during the early hours just after sunrise, but my conscious mind doesn't register a difference until perspiration pops on my skin.

This week has been the perspiration on my forehead experience.

Sales that beat my expectations.
Fan emails coming in. I have fans. OMG!
But the change occurred awhile back, when I committed to my writing, to my stories, to my dream!

Is it just newbie author jitters or am I going nuts?

Woke up at 4am thinking about my release day. What promo can I do that I haven't done? When I get my new banner on Sunday, what sites can I send it to? Will reviewers like my book? More importantly - will readers? Did I and the editors catch all the typos... Whirling and whirling.

I wouldn't change a thing. This is a dream realized.

Brooke stopped with her. “What’s the matter?”

“Damn it! I-I—.”

“I think we should try coming back to this club another time,” Brooke suggested.

Micki took a seat on the bench. “No. The hurt is gone now.”

Brooke sat beside her. “Have you ever experienced something like this before?”

“No.”

“What did it feel like?”

“Cold.” It felt like utter emptiness, loss, which made no sense. Did it have anything to do with Jared?

I wish he were here.

“You sure it’s over?”

Micki wasn’t sure. Then she saw Jared materialize in a haze before her, there more in spirit than in body. Odd… She stopped thinking about how and why when he grazed his hands on her thighs straight to where she needed him most. His touch was very real. Lust sprang like a living thing in her, and she sucked in a breath.

“Micki?” Brooke’s voice sounded far away.

I've ordered a banner for The Romance Studio (TRS) and will be trying to get it up on Joyfully Reviewed and Fallen Angels Reviews. Got some photos taken. hoping to get some press here locally. Finishing up my Final Line Edits (FLEs) which is the last step for me. I think in print there is another step called galleys. Finally sent my money for NTRWA's Texas Two Step and my registration form. Mowed the lawn. Now, sitting down to finish the FLEs. Then, hope to get on to Love Ink which Candace Havens has put a deadline on me for 9/15/2009. I only have 1 chapter written. Oh boy! Fun. Love it!

A Writer needs Writers

It has been said many times that a writer's life is very solitary. That's hard for me since I am so social. Even if you're shy and find public events difficult, as a writer you need other writers.

Why?

To learn. To share. To grow.

Tonight, I had a wonderful time with Shayla Black and Nikki Duncan. We ate pizza and had a couple of drinks. We laughed, caught up, talked business, and had a wonderful time.
When I got home, I got the information about my release with Siren up at Dallas Area Romance Authors (DARA), a writers' group I just joined this past weekend. I've been a member of North Texas Romance Writers of America (NTRWA) for two years.

For me, any success I've ever had is due to the mentoring and support of other writers. I've learned how to write, how to promote, what publishers are looking for what type of books, how to overcome obstacles, that there is no such thing as Writer's Block... but if you ever happen to have it - how to kick it into submission and start writing again.

I'm not sure how successful I'll become on this journey of writing. But, I do know that whatever pinnacles I reach, I will get there with the help and encouragement of other writers.

Okay -

So, I only have 2 followers. I think they're both great friends and authors.

I'm blogging for me, now. Not thinking about how it promotes my debut book, helps my writing career, makes connections... It is just for me.

I made a book vid for my book. Was that for me, too? I think so. Who buys a book based on a book vid? Or even a banner? Anyway, it was fun. The downside - I didn't write for two days. Sun - migraine. Mon - vid creation.

Oh boy! I've got two self-imposed deadlines. Well, really one--the other is a deadline to Candace Havens, a wonderful author who kicks the butts of newbies like me. No wonder she was awarded RWA's Mentor of the Year designation.

Deadline one - Love Ink - 9/15 to Candace.

Deadline two - Captivation (book 2 of E3) to submit to Siren

And I am still waiting to hear from my editor about my revisions. I'm getting scared.

Captivation

Jumping back into Captivation (Book 2, Eternally Three). I took a month away from the book to do my edits for Siren for Perfection (Book 1).

Perfection's trio were so different than Captivation's Nash (warrior jinn), Eve (human bloodliner), and Kronos (angel). Since I've been away from them for over a month, they are a bit ticked off at me (at least that's what seems to be happening at the computer when I try to write them). It's as if they all have their backs to me.

I hope since I'm spending more time with them, they'll turn around and start talking to me again.

A Unique Day

Saturday:
7am – Arose, thrilled that I’d made my First Round of Edits (FRE) back to my publisher (Siren).

8am – Bagles and Coffee (must have) with Stephen, Steve, Juanita, and Mike—a weekend ritual that I’ve been missing... being under deadline.

9am – Meet with author friend, Shayla Black at Starbucks (Yes, more coffee)

10:30am – Writers Meeting – North Texas Romance Writers Association (NTRWA)

2pm – Went with two friends, authors Nikki Duncan and Jax Cassidy, to Catherine Spangler’s signing at Barnes and Noble for her book Touched by Light

3:30pm – back home – mowed the lawn

6pm – dinner with Stephen, Chuck and Mike

8pm – Went to see the musical Altar Boyz by Uptown Players

10pm – home, read and responded to emails (still many to get through)

10:30pm – bed

A bit of guilt for not writing, but I needed a brain rest.

Today, back to the more typical day for me. Writing, email management, etc…
(A guilty wink) but I do have a massage at 10am.

Thrilled and Nervous

Hi! I'm thrilled and nervous about my first book coming out at Siren.

The reality is setting in, especially since the publisher put up a bio about me. My good friends, authors Shayla Black and Melissa Schroeder, say that it will really hit me when I get the cover.

Boy, I'm nervous. Why?

Well, getting a book ready for publishing is quite a long journey. Though I don't have kids of my own, except the four-legged kind, I'd equate it to raising a child. First, you give birth and get the first draft done. The labor can be quite an ordeal. Next, you enter some contests. Yikes!, when it brings back a failing grade. Next draft. More contests, better grades. As its parent, you think its ready, but you don't realize how biased you are. "My baby is perfect. I wouldn't change a thing." But then it can't find a home; no publisher wants it. More drafts...and margaritas. Finally, a publisher wants it. You sigh. Your baby has made it. STOP! Not so fast. The editor, I equate to your child's first boss, says there's things to be changed. At first, as a parent, you think, "Not true. It's perfect." Until you read the comments. Groan! Warts and pimples that you never noticed before, and how could I've let it leave the house looking like that? More writing...and margaritas.
Finally, it's ready and you see your name next to your baby's.
